Thursday Warmup: Acceleration vs. Velocity (2013-05-09)

Acceleration is different than velocity. Make sure you know how and why!

1. What does it mean to have a velocity of +10 and an acceleration of 0?

The object is moving at a steady speed.
The object is losing speed.
The object is gaining speed.

2. What does it mean to have a velocity of +10 and and acceleration of -10?

The object is moving at a steady speed.
The object is moving and gaining speed;
The object is moving and losing speed.

3. What does it mean to have a velocity of +10 and an acceleration of +10?

The object is moving at a steady speed.
The object is moving and gaining speed.
The object is moving and losing speed.

4. What does it mean to have a speed of 0 and an acceleration of +10?

The object is moving at a steady speed.
The object is not yet moving but will begin to gain speed.

If acceleration can be compared, it can also be calculated. Here you will show that you know how!

EQUAL ACCELERATIONS
1. Look at this list of accelerations and select the two that are equal.
  • 0-10 m/s in 2 sec
  • 0-10 m/s in 1 sec
  • 0-20 m/s in 2 sec

2. Look at this list of accelerations and select the two that are equal.
  • 0-10 m/s in 2 sec
  • 10-20 m/s in 2 sec
  • 0-20 m/s in 2 sec

3. Look at this list of accelerations and select the two that are equal.
  • 100-200 m/s in 2 sec
  • 100-200 m/s in 1 sec
  • 0-100 m/s in 2 sec


4. Follow this link and line up the situations according to their acceleration.
